⚡ Energy at Work: The Biggest Drain of All?
In my experience, the single greatest energy drain at work isn’t lack of direction, workload, pace, or pressure.
It’s a breach of trust.
When trust is broken, energy leaks everywhere.
Would you agree?
🔐 What is Trust?
“Trust is the glue of life. It’s the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It’s the foundational principle that holds all relationships.”
— The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey
“To trust fundamentally means to make yourself vulnerable to the actions of others.”
— The Power of Trust, Sandra Sucher & Shalene Gupta
Trust = vulnerability + reliability. And vulnerability costs huge energy when it isn’t safe.
📊 What the Data Says (MIT x Deloitte)
A 2-year study by MIT Sloan Management Review (sponsored by Deloitte) in 2023, involving 15,000+ employees across 10 industries, shows just how decisive trust really is. They measured four drivers of trust: humanity, transparency, capability and reliability.
High-trust workplaces show:
- 41% less sick leave
- 50% lower turnover risk
- 260% higher motivation
The trust gap:
- 25% of employees do not trust their employer
- Employers overestimate trust levels in their employees by up to ~40%
Do you find that gap shocking?
It’s pure energy loss.
🚀 When Trust Is High…
Energy flows.
You see:
- Higher engagement
- Stronger collaboration
- More innovation
- Better productivity
- Sustainable profitability
Trust isn’t “soft”. It’s an energy system.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
When trust is missing, energy drains which decreases performance and therefore profitability. Examples show up as:
- Absenteeism – physically absent ⇨ has already collapsed
- Presenteeism – I’m here but not really ⇨ energy quietly and constantly leaking
- Quiet quitting – I’ll do exactly what’s required and nothing more ⇨ engagement switched to off
- Turnover
- HR disputes
- Bullying & conflict
Questions for reflection:
👉 Where is trust building energy in your organisation—and where might it be leaking it?
👉 When have you lost others’ trust?
👉 When have others lost your trust?
Next time, we will consider the neuroscience of trust and how to begin to rebuild trust once its eroding/eroded.
